Raw material risk assessment is among the most technically challenging areas for food manufacturers to effectively address. The systems on Food Portal make it quick and easy to produce version-controlled risk assessments for each of your raw materials, and each supply route can be risk assessed independently.
Raw material risk assessment
Define manufacture sites
The risk assessment includes identification of manufacture sites. You can assign an indefinite number of manufacture sites to a single supply route – so if you are purchasing from an agent supplier and that agent is sourcing the traded good from 20 different manufacturers, you can identify the manufacture sites against the risk assessment for the supply route. |
Composition
For each item on the composition table, you can select whether it is a compound or component. If you select compound, subsequent items can be identified as sub-components by selecting the compound from a drop-down list. The system has been designed to be user-friendly and intuitive.
Allergens
Microbiological and chemical surveillance schedules
Dietary and sustainability assurance
The risk assessment allows you to administrate compatibility with dietary restrictions and assurance schemes, with the flexibility to incorporate details such as material category and certificate number according to the specific compliance standard – providing assurance that the system will be adaptable to the evolving requirements of compliance standards as new revisions are published.
Vulnerability to substitution, adulteration, and fraud
The vulnerability assessment is structured to guide the process for identification of elevated risk factors by presenting low, medium, and high-risk responses to a range of considerations. This simplifies the application of the vulnerability assessment and provides transparency across the considerations that contribute to any risk mitigation actions. |
Acceptance criteria
Packaging
Built a substantiated knowledge base for every material you handle, ready to answer any enquiry from packaging waste calculation figures through percent recycled and method of closure.
Version control
Each raw material risk assessment is subject to document control and there are no minimum requirements for the progression of a revision of the risk assessment. This means when you begin using the system, you can populate the risk assessment with as much or as little material information as you find practical and update the version information as you add details or make changes. |
Generation of site control documents
The approved list of raw materials for purchasing is generated based on the supply routes being ‘active’ status and the manufacturers reflect the active version of the risk assessment for the supply route in each case. The raw material approved list is itself document controlled and superseded versions are listed in the revision history. |
Connect with your suppliers
You can link the product specification provided by your supplier into your raw material risk assessment, and risk assessment information will populate into your risk assessment directly from the supplier’s product specification without the need for any further data entry or administration.
Any of your suppliers can generate product specifications via the Food Portal Supplier Directory.

Risk assessment populated from product specification
For supply routes whose risk assessments are linked to the supplier’s specification, the information will be viewable in the same areas of the risk assessment, but it will not be editable and a notice at the bottom of the page will explain that the information reflects the current version of the supplier’s product specification. Not only does this eliminate data-entry and administrative burden, but massively reduces the potential for input-errors across the supply chain. |
Food Portal provides functional systems to take the pain out of raw material risk assessment. We've made it a real priority to deliver a user experience designed to take the administration and time demand out of this resource-hungry task. You can have greater confidence in your approval systems for less time and effort.
A holistic service:
Food Portal offers a holistic range of cloud-based quality systems for food manufacturers. The service is not split into modules, so you'll never need to compromise on the functions you have access to.
Food Portal enables you to create a profile for each of your suppliers and manufacture sites, and administrate approval and assurance evidence.

The systems on Food Portal allow you to quickly and easily produce version-controlled risk assessments for each raw material supply route. The user interface was inspired by retailer specification systems and has been developed to take the frustration out of this technically demanding task.
|
The information you enter into the risk assessment for each individual raw material is used to automatically generate a range of site control documents, including: the approved list for purchasing, the allergen risk assessment, the raw material acceptance criteria reference document, the site vulnerability assessment, and raw material surveillance schedules.
|
The incidents management system rationalises all quality incidents that occur throughout your operations into a single register, and provides a structure for investigation and responsive actions. Trending is done automatically so when you use Food Portal to record and close-out incidents, you don't need to do any further administration for performance trending.
|
Food Portal provides facilities for you to define your auditing team, risk-assess audits to determine auditing frequency, establish your auditing schedule, and carry out audits. You can carry out factory audits using a smart phone, uploading photo evidence on the go.
|
The systems on Food Portal don't just handle your raw material and finished product traceability information - when you allocate a batch of product to a customer order, traceability information is automatically emailed to your customer, and you have the facility to offer your customers verification that materials have been drawn from a positive stock pool.
